Since its founding in 1876, Prairie View A&M University, also known as Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth, has benefited from leaders whose vision and commitment in educating young, driven
students in Texas with the goal of uplifting The African-American community.
Viola Hebert has experienced a long-lived career across diverse industries and in various roles. Healthcare, specifically Nursing, served as a solid springboard to launch Viola’s career, which spanned from direct patient care to management and leadership roles in information technology, education and training, workforce development in military and civilian sectors, professional speaking and corporate engagement, adjunct college professor, and serving as an officer or board member of professional and voluntary organizations.
Viola shares the following about her college experience at PVAMU:
“It is difficult for me to name THE most memorable time I had while at PVAMU. My time was split as a nursing major (e.g., 2 years on “the hill” and 2 years in the Houston medical community). While I took full advantage of the collegiate campus experience and all that PVAMU had to offer, my most memorable time while on campus was the opportunity to pledge Eta Beta Chapter and be honored with sisterhood in the spring of 1972 to The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. My experience as a nursing student in the hospitals of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center and the VA Hospital was all at once scary, exhilarating, awakening and a period of rapid growth and maturation! Overall, my PVAMU experience can best be described in one word…. “AWESOME!”
